Autumn overcast -- sky gray, diffuse, casting light from every angle; and just cold enough to keep you on edge. Coffee then, a hot, sharp contrast against the gloom, that sudden spread of warmth from lips and hands that ebbs and breaks again. The lengthening shadows at dusk, and that most cheerful thing a city can do, winking its lights on one by one, as nightfall sweeps across it. The way that soft drizzle makes a every light a halo, every walker a brooding figure, every breath a pointed sensation.

When my husband asks for seconds of the dinner I cooked (from scratch). When my 4 yr old son uses "delectable" to describe his food. When the recipient of an art exchange genuinely likes what I drew for him/her. When one of my characters level in World of Warcraft or City of Heroes. When I read a nifty story in the news, especially if it's made national news. Finding an extra dollar in my wallet, or a paper dollar in my change purse. Chatting with my mom on the phone. Having a strange cat come up and decide that my leg needs rubbing against. The smell of sandalwood incense smoldering. Dressing up in medieval clothes. Looking extra nifty in my Elizabethan garb. When the weather's cool enough to snuggle under the covers with my husband. Cracking an especially painful pun, and hearing and watching the groans from my friends. Hearing an especially painful pun from one of my friends, and joining in the groaning. Taking a fresh batch of cookies from the oven. Taking a freshly baked cake from the oven. Starting a loaf of bread in the bread maker.

These are a few of the things that make me happy.

That Matt video made me cry for being happy.

Sitting in a pub saying nothing while a bunch of my friends are sat around me talking, bitching, telling stories, dancing with their shoulders (carefully, so they don't spill their drink), and making each other laugh. With an unstoppable little smile on my face.

Also, cheesecake and falling asleep all curled up with someone I care about. Not at the same time, mind.

And books. Particularly books like The Society of Others, because they are full of love and hope and idealism mixed perfectly with depression, misery and ignorance, and so include lines like this:

"In the midst of aches in the joints, anxiety over the payment of bills, concern for the safety of those you love, envy of the rich, fear of robbers, dog-weariness at the end of a long day, and the unacceptable slipping away of youth, there does occasionally appear, like a ray of light piercing the clouds, a moment of joy. Perhaps you have entered the house and sat down before removing your boots. A friend has pressed a drink into your hands, and is telling you the latest news. You see from his face that he's glad you've come in; and you are glad too. Glad to be sitting down, glad of the warming glow of the drink, glad of your friend's furrowed brow and eager speech. For this moment, nothing more is required. It is in its way unimprovable. This is what I mean by the Great Enough."

A comfortable chair and a good book. (Hot chocolate is optional.)

The moment of *I Made This* that comes at the end of a project, whether it's a bookcase or a loaf of bread.

Felis domesticus.

Rainbows.

An unexpected raccoon. ("Oh, hi! Where're you going?")
