Ted 40 – Home

The Milk Float from Father Ted is getting pushed round Ireland to raise money for two Down’s Syndrome charities. Reading the stories of some of the people got me a little teary eyed.

I know this post makes sense only to Father Ted fans, but it’s too cool not to share. This BBC story explains a bit more.

I wonder if this is more of an issue in Ireland where abortion is illegal. In the USA, 80% of pregnancies where Down’s Syndrome is diagnoses, are terminated. I’ve read other studies that showed higher numbers. This could be why there is at least one billboard in town that alludes to continuing such a pregnancy. I don’t remember the words, but I do remember the picture, of two brothers hugging, one with Down’s Syndrome.

Interesting too, or maybe not, I’ve found recently that the kids I’ve run into with Down’s are quite capable of a lot of things. Earlier therapy makes a difference, I bet. It’s not the big scary thing I thought it was. There was a time I would have thought that if the test came positive, I could have never coped with a kid like that; now I know differently. Not to judge those who can’t, but it’s amazing how my perspective has changed since meeting some toddlers recently.

Anyways, Father Ted is brilliant, so this fund raiser really caught my eye.
